Bad Case Of Whiskey Dick Or Is It Erectile Dysfunction?

Updated: May 30, 2023

“I swear this has never happened before”

A statement said by many guys who had a little too much to drink, and couldn’t perform. The urban dictionary term we all know, “Whiskey dick” is something most guys fear and get embarrassed about.

It also turns a fun drunk night into an awkward one real fast when both you and your partner don’t know what to do.

There is a stigma behind whiskey dick that you only get it by drinking whiskey, but this is only a myth. The real term is “Alcohol dick” and you can get temporary ED if you have too much to drink from ANY type of alcohol. Now as much as some people love alcohol, the same alcohol can be your worst enemy, especially in the bedroom.

So let's talk about how alcohol can affect your erections and sexual performance.

How Does Alcohol Affect Your Erections?

Before we go any further, you need to understand that erections are all about nerve sensitivity and blood circulation. If blood doesn’t flow properly to the penis, you are less likely to have a healthy erection. It is important to know that alcohol is also a depressant. Drinking alcohol in excess makes it harder for any man to obtain an erection.

Here’s why:

  • Alcohol has a sedating effect on the brain. To get an erection, your brain needs to send a message to your penis. Alcohol slows down or completely cuts the signals between your brain and body. No signals equal no erections!

  • Alcohol also causes dehydration. It results in low blood volume resulting in reduced circulation. As explained above, erections are all about blood flow, and without normal blood flow you are not going to get a strong erection needed to get the job done.

  • And If you are dehydrated, your body also produces a hormone called angiotensin. There is a direct connection between dehydration and ED issues. This hormone level increases due to dehydration resulting in constricted blood vessels and reduced circulation.

So is whiskey dick considered ED? Alcohol-induced ED is the correct terminology and although the effects are temporary, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have ED. If your erections are rock-hard without the use of alcohol then you should be okay.

But, you should always check with a doctor because ED is inevitable for some men with health issues and you always should be taking preventative measures to make sure you have a strong and healthy penis.

When Whiskey Dick Is Actually Erectile Dysfunction

Remember ED is a complex issue. It can be caused by physical, mental, and external forces. The main causes are:

  • Lack of blood flow into the penis

  • Blood is not trapped in the penis during an erection

  • Damaged nerves in the penis

  • Blood vessel disease due to diabetes

  • Peyronie’s disease

  • Side effects from chronic illnesses

  • Drug or medication-related side effects

If alcohol isn’t the culprit and you are experiencing ED-like symptoms with little to no alcohol in your system, then it may be any one of these main root causes. Alcohol will only worsen these symptoms if you actually do have full-blown ED. It’s always best to get a proper diagnosis to find out the root cause for treatment.

Even if it means visiting multiple doctors (urologists) who are truly educated will help you get on the right path for what you need.

So, How Many Drinks or Shots Will It Take To Trigger Whiskey Dick?

What’s a good limit so I can still have drunk sex?

Good question.

Most guys don’t even think about the amount of alcohol they consume when going to a bar or when going on a date. And most of the time they drink because it gives them “liquid courage" to either approach a girl or to dance and be the life of the party.

Unfortunately, there is no hard rule or magic number until you trigger whiskey dick. Getting drunk depends on your body composition and overall health.

For men, alcohol can affect erections by any one of these factors:

  • how much you’ve had to drink

  • your total blood alcohol level (BAC)

  • body composition

  • other medications or drugs you’ve taken (drug side effects can worsen if you drink...fyi)

  • how fast you drank (It’s not a race bro)

  • whether you’ve eaten

  • how much water you drink

  • your tolerance

Don’t Be a Whiskey Dick Story!

Now drinking in moderation and staying hydrated can definitely help you avoid the unwanted “whiskey dick”. You can always do trial and error to find the right balance. But, that would mean that you would actually have to get with someone to really know if you drank too much and can’t get it up. And if you ask us, that can be hard to do if you’re trying to be coherent and remember these things while getting drunk and hooking up with someone.

Instead of going through all of that, why not just avoid it altogether? A good suggestion would be to just go with the flow, hydrate in between drinks with nonalcoholic beverages (water), and avoid drinking too fast and too much in a short time span.

And if you’re excessively drinking on a date, it either means you’re not into that person or you don’t want to remember the sex or the person the next day.

But, let’s be real...this is how whiskey dick tends to happen, and the word gets out that you had a bad case of whiskey dick.

So, remember to drink in moderation so you don’t end up becoming a “whiskey dick story” to a bunch of mutual friends or potential sex partners you may run into in the future!

The Bars Are Opening Back Up After COVID-19, Am I Doomed for Whiskey Dick?

With bars reopening a lot of people are letting loose and releasing pent-up energy from staying inside.

According to a RAND Corporation study, alcohol consumption has been on the rise since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. People have been consuming more alcohol than ever because of anxiety, stress, lack of activity, and various other reasons.

Millions of people lost their jobs during the pandemic and suffer from depression. Staying home with no earnings is a stressful situation. It becomes even worse when you can’t go outside and meet your loved ones. Social distancing is a necessary step to stay safe during the pandemic. However, it makes us feel lonely and isolated, which increases anxiety.

According to the US National Library of Medicine, people with anxiety problems are 2 to 4 times more vulnerable to alcohol use disorder (AUD). It explains why people are drinking more than ever.

Unfortunately, these drinking habits are probably the reason why it's causing guys to have “whisky dicks” or temporary ED. We recently had good ol' St. Patricks Day the other day. Whether you went out drinking that night or plan to this weekend, we really hope you guys drank in moderation and "got lucky".

It is important to drink in a healthy manner to ensure you live a healthy life. Excessive drinking may not only cause temporary ED but other health issues as well.

Make It Easier to Get It Up With the Phoenix Acoustic Wave Device

When guys experience issues "getting it up", they feel embarrassed to go to a doctor. Usually, they end up buying illegal gas station dick pills to complement the night out. But, instead of them actually helping like the packaging claims, these gas station pills reduce your chances of getting proper erections and sexual performance. And for some, gas station pills don’t mix well with alcohol.

So, what is the solution?

The Phoenix is an at-home acoustic wave therapy device that can help improve men's sexual performance in bed and make it easier to "get it up". Men who use The Phoenix enjoy better sex and find it much easier to rise to the occasion.

But, can it revive “whiskey dick”?

Although it helps men rise to the occasion easier, it will not help your whiskey dick or prevent you from getting a whiskey dick.

Remember the brain and penis are connected. Alcohol is a depressant and it can impair the connection causing you not to achieve an erection or maintain one to get the job done.

Alcohol also reduces sensitivity. This is why some guys last longer in bed when they’re a little buzzed or drunk.

So the bottom line is, don’t get too drunk or avoid drinking altogether. If you ask us, we prefer great/amazing sex versus feeling numb from alcohol. Alcohol is fun, but don’t let it get in the way of sex, especially if you haven’t gotten any or much since COVID-19 started.
